Children Visiting Special Hospitals

1. Introduction

Government issued guidance relating children visiting adults in special hospital in 2003 to ensure that children are appropriately safeguarded – LAC(2000)18 Guidance to Local Authority Social Services Department on Visits by Children to Special Hospitals and HSC19 99/160 (Health Service Circular) Visits by Children to Ashworth, Broadmoor and Rampton Hospitals Directions, amended by HSC 2000/027 Visits by children to Ashworth, Broadmoor and Rampton hospitals.

This procedure relates to the process to be undertaken by the special hospitals named and Children’s social care when requests are received from patients for a child to visit.

Staff in these specific hospitals are required to take certain steps prior to involving Children’s social care in the assessment of risk if such a visit is requested. These are outlined below and are in addition to the steps necessary for Children’s social care to take.
