In Greater Manchester, circumcision for baby boys is not provided by the NHS unless there is a medical reason. However, many families want to have their baby boys circumcised for religious or cultural reasons. Until now parents haven’t had any formal support across Greater Manchester in finding and choosing private services to perform the circumcision.
The Greater Manchester Safeguarding Partnership has produced a leaflet to help parents choose a circumcision service they feel confident in. It is important circumcisions are done somewhere clean and sterile, that parents know before whether they will be present during the circumcision, and that babies are given pain relief before and after. The person who does the circumcision should be available in the days and weeks afterwards to see the baby if the parents are worried about his recovery.
The leaflet will be given out by GPs, midwives, health visitors, faith and community groups. It is also available to view or download above
Quality Assured Providers 2012/13:
Public Health Manchester has led a voluntary quality assurance process to develop minimum standards for male infant circumcision services. Local services that provide circumcision for baby boys have been invited to have the quality of their care assessed. This involves services telling us about the care they provide. A list of services that provide good practice is available below, and will be updated every year.
The Quality Assurance Panel will meet again in early 2013 and the list of providers included here will be updated accordingly. If you provide male infant circumcision in Greater Manchester and would like to apply for quality assurance of your service, please send your contact details to Public Health Manchester via gmsp@stockport.gov.uk or by post to Public Health Manchester, 3rd Floor Manchester City Council, P.O. Box 532, Town Hall, Manchester, M60 2LA and we will keep you up-to-date with the application process for 2012/13.

Notes on circumcisions
Male infant circumcision is a surgical procedure to remove the foreskin of the penis.
Circumcision of infant males is common practice in many religious and cultural groups, including Judaism and Islam. Due to Greater Manchester’s diverse and growing population, growing numbers of baby boys require circumcision each year.
In order to safeguard boys from the potential harm associated with poorly conducted male infant circumcision, parents need to be able to access a safe, quality assured service. The list of services that meet the minimum quality standards will be available for parents from February 2012, and will be reviewed annually.
Female Genital Cutting is not associated and is illegal under the Female Genital Mutilation Act (2003). For more information see www.fco.gov.uk/fgm
