FGM Forum
Following a multi-agency conference in Manchester, a Female Genital Mutilation Forum has been set up in Greater Manchester to bring together colleagues working with Adults and Children who may become, or have been, affected by Female Genital Mutilation in any of its forms. The Forum aims to prevent, provide for and protect women and girls across Greater Manchester. It will develop an action plan to work with communities to do this whilst raising awareness amongst professionals and community members of the services available and looking at whether those services are accessible and effective.

The aims of the Forum are identified below:
- To monitor the prevalence of FGM across Greater Manchester through midwifery and CSC data.
- To influence the provision of quality assured FGM training and protocols/policies across Greater Manchester
- To work with CPS/GMP on best practice approaches to protection and prosecution learning from the Metropolitan Police’s Project Azure.
- To publicise the prevention of FGM as a safeguarding and human rights issue.
- To consult with local women affected by this issue.
- To promote a holistic approach to adult women who have been mutilated considering referral pathways to support and knowledge of options including deinfibulation surgery.
- To report on progress annually to representative’s LSCB/LSABs.
With the support and co-ordination of the Forum, LSCBs will be asked to:
- Raise awareness amongst partner agencies and the community. Posters and leaflets should be displayed in relevant locations, particularly G.P surgeries and education establishments where possible. Free posters and leaflets can be obtained from fgm@fco.gov.uk
- Ensure that they are able to signpost to / provide appropriate training on Female Genital Mutilation. To eliminate FGM is about partnership working between community women and professionals. Professionals require empathy for the women who have been mutilated and must understand the issues around tradition and culture.
- Ensure a holistic approach towards adult women who are still suffering the effects of FGM particularly where they wish to embark on deinfibulation (reversal of stitching of the genitalia). The referral pathway which currently exists in Manchester consists of G.P. referral to St Marys Gynaecology or Liverpool Womens Hospital.
